Alliance between Fundació Puigvert and IOMED for researching uro-nephro-andrological diseases

IOMED's technology significantly reduces the time required for obtaining clinical research data.

IOMED's technology significantly reduces the time required for obtaining clinical research data. . The implementation of this technology will facilitate Fundació Puigvert's participation in multicenter big data and AI projects, enabling them to enhance and optimize the treatment of future patients.

Fundació Puigvert will boost its research with the artificial intelligence technology developed by IOMED Medical Solutions, which will automate access to clinical data for hospital researchers in order to conduct more studies in less time, with large volumes of data, and at a lower cost. "We already have the first two candidate projects, one in uro-oncology and another in hereditary kidney disease, using IOMED's technology. We are in the implementation phase, and the expectations are high as a research enhancement technology in our center," explains Dr. Sílvia Mateu, research coordinator at Fundació Puigvert.

"This technology will enable our participation in multicenter big data and artificial intelligence projects that will expand knowledge not only in highly prevalent pathologies such as various urogenital tumors or chronic kidney disease but also in the field of rare minority diseases, where having a large number of cases from collaboration between many centers is essential," comments Dr. Mateu. "Sharing data on a large scale provides a lot of information about the real-life experience of treated or monitored patients in the studied pathologies, information that would otherwise be impossible to obtain. The results of big data and AI studies are essential for improving and optimizing the management and future treatment of patients. They have the potential to achieve more effective and personalized medicine," she adds.

Javier de Oca, CEO and co-founder of IOMED, comments on the alliance: "It will allow healthcare professionals and researchers to access stored data in a tenth of the time that would be spent on manual data extraction."

Data Anonymization

The technology has been provided to Fundació Puigvert by IOMED Medical Solutions for free. It transforms data from free-text clinical records (clinical notes, clinical courses, medical reports of diagnostic tests, discharge reports, surgical intervention reports, etc.) into coded data using standard clinical vocabularies (SNOMED, ICD-9, ICD-10, LOINC, etc.). This transformation is carried out using artificial intelligence algorithms and natural language processing that structure all written information. The data is anonymized and stored on the hospital's servers, which will maintain governance and custody at all times.

Federated European Clinical Research Network

IOMED is part of the EDHEN project, which aims to create a federated network of medical data at the European level to enhance health research. Within this European initiative, IOMED has processed data from over 18 million patients. "Data structuring is essential for big data and artificial intelligence projects to address the study of uro-nephro-andrological pathologies in the real-world setting. Transforming data into OMOP standards will facilitate internal research projects and, above all, allow us to participate more standardized, easily, and efficiently in large-scale projects promoted by both private companies and collaborative independent research groups. We will be able to participate in large-scale projects at the European level where this technology is preferred," indicates the research coordinator of Fundació Puigvert. Javier de Oca, CEO and co-founder of IOMED, highlights the importance of this agreement. "This agreement will allow Fundació Puigvert to be at the forefront of global clinical research."
